I just got home from having to euthanize one of our dogs. It's a really terrible situation and I find that I simply can't write about it. But the reason for this post is to mark what the first thing I read when getting back was. I was checking out the wonderful site, Jezebel, when I came upon this article. At first, I thought it was terrible luck to come across that right after having to put Wrangler down. But I think it was actually the opposite. What it said really helped me deal with the situation. So, thanks Jezebel. And thanks, Wrangler; love you, babe.

As I've said before, adopting a pet is perhaps the most masochistic thing we humans can do to ourselves. We develop affection, friendship, and unconditional love for our companion animals, all with the knowledge that we will be completely bereft and broken-hearted when we (inevitably) outlive them. But the upside of that total buzzkill (sorry) is that those of us who grew up alongside animals are lucky to have experienced those emotions; through them, we were given the tools to cope with love and loss, specifically, the ability to understand that just because loved ones are out of our lives, the impacts they made remain.
Today, after dropping Maddie off at the vet, Rain, mom, and myself all went to Home Depot. Hardly an unusual circumstance. We even have a Home Depot Card. I knew when entering the store exactly where the shovels and hoes we wanted were. We have been spending that much time in that store over the last couple months. We have started to feel at home there. Who cares we're women amateurs. We belonged.
That is until we were looking at Christmas decorations and thought we heard a mouse or a kitten. Rain is the first to point this out. Then me and my mother joined in looking for the kitten. Very soon we figured out that it was not a mouse or a kitten. It was in fact the christmas decoration, the light figure moving its squeeky head.
Even in the very center of Home Depot with tools in the cart and a membership card in pocket, we were all reduced to cooing over the possible mews of an invisible kitten within 5 seconds.
I know the man who was behind us was about to laugh his ass off. So nice of him to wait until we were out of earshot.
Despite taking a big step back for Women In Warehouses, I'm kind of more disappointed that there wasn't a kitten.
Do you have a pet? What kind of pet do you own, and why did you choose it?

Of course I have a pet! I have many but I'll focus on the one that's really mine. That would be Noire, the kitten I raised since she could curl up in my palm. I found her by accident. I had gone out to swim in the pool. My mom came out to talk to me. We both heard some pitiful mewing from the side of the house. We followed it, chased away a tomcat, and found this tiny and so very, very sick little black kitten. We took her to the hospital. I was sure that she would have to be put down so I refused to give her a name. But she tried to play with the vet that was examining her (very, very infected) eyes. They said that she could possibly survive. So we took her home, bottle-fed her, and she got better rapidly. At first, we thought she'd lose one of her eyes, since the pupil had even broke through while healing. Then we thought she'd be blind. Eventually, it healed so well that she can see almost perfectly and you can't even tell that anything was wrong with the eye. You might be able to tell if you see it in the right light and then you'll see this tiny pinprick of a hazy spot. She has tons of spunk and I love her to death.

It's not my "BEST" pet photo, but I'm not going to go through all the photos looking for the "BEST." Instead, I'll show one that makes me happy. It's a pic of my baby Noire asleep on my lap (on her birthday) while I'm at the computer.
