Congratulations, Sarah! Finishing a novel is wonderful news. Maybe you could post the first few chapters? Or if you don't want to do that, I'd love to read the first chapter.

oh, mad congrats on finishing your first! i am officially jealous! i can't even seem to get halfway through a novel yet, let alone finish one. i'm lucky if i can finish a story these days, so I am definitely in awe that you had the cajones to actually finish. finishing always seems to be the hardest part.

good luck with the next steps! have you ever read Miss Snark, the Literary Agent? she doesn't post anymore, but her blog is a veritable... plethora of good advice from the agently end of the spectrum. does plethora work in that sentance? i'm not quite sure!

and i call myself a writer...! ;)

Thanks. It really does feel great to finally accomplish something like that. And as for the beauty thing...I guess it wouldn't be strange then that I get the urge to hug it when no body's looking? ;)
Thanks, Renee. I'm really happy to be done. Sorry, I don't think I can post it to the internet. Once we post something to the nets, we have no real control on who has read it and where copies might be. And though I think it'll be a hard sell, I still hope to eventually sell it to a publisher. If you'd like to read some though, I'd be happy to email the first chapter or so to you. I have no problem sharing it with friends, it's just the public forum of the net that I'm very reluctant with.

Thank you so much. You're right, finishing really is the hard part. This is the second novel I've written, but the first I've finished. Actually, that's technically not true. It's the third I've written and the second I've finished but the one before this was never meant to ever be published and really taught me a lot of things about dealing with such a large piece of work. For example, from that first finished piece, I knew that by the time you get to the end, your style changes from the beginning. As writers, we are always developing and refining, even within a piece. That's why I was constantly rereading and editing while writing, to make sure that my style and voice would remain strong from beginning to end. I once read that a writer doesn't really know his/her style or voice until he/she has written about 1000 pages. I think that is very true. Until then we are testing ourselves, exploring our options, we are learning what works and more importantly what doesn't. So that's how I see the works that I never finished. Even though a piece might not have gotten very far or reached its end, we still learn and accomplish through it. I think that's a good way to look on the pieces that we struggle to end.

Yes, in fact, I have read from the lovely Miss Snark. Plethora was definitely a good word choice. I love that word. It's just one of those that if I read, I can say over and over again to myself while no one is looking. Oh, don't look at me like that. You know you do it too.
